Bending Light

Hypothesis: Light rays change direction when they enter the water.

Equipment: 10 straws
5 clear plastic cups
water (enough to half fill each cup )

Prediction: The straws when placed in the water will look like they are bent.

Procedure: 1.Half fill each cup with water
2.Observe the straw before placing in water. What do you see?
3.Put the straws in water
4. Look down at the straw in the water. What do you see?
5. Lift the straws out of the water. What do you see?

Result: The light rays change direction when entering the water and makes the straw look bent.

Implication: All objects when placed in water will look bent. This is because light rays change direction when they enter the water.
